Summer in the French Alps, and a couple of cable car rides up high above Chamonix will take you as close as you can get to the summit of Mont Blanc, the highest Mountain in Europe, without putting on crampons.

This photo was taken shortly after dawn at around 7.30am and you can see the early morning mist in the valley bottom as the mountains cast huge long shadows. It looks peaceful, yet behind me the skies were buzzing with helicopters as earlier that morning seven mountaineers lost their lives on the mountain, caught up in an avalanche – and this was August!
